A Brief History of Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The first Western reports of a giant lizard on Komodo Island reached Dutch colonial authorities in 1910. In 1925, Dutch administrator P.A. Ouwens published the first scientific description of Varanus komodoensis. The Sultan of Bima issued the first formal protection order for Komodo dragons in 1926. The park was officially established by the Indonesian government in 1980 and was later inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. In 2011, Komodo National Park was named one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.
